Poppy plants (Papaver somniferum), which are native to Central Asia, produce a distinct ribbed seed capsule filled with numerous seeds after flowering. The opium poppy is known for its culinary seeds, and its Latin name references its sleep-inducing properties due to the presence of compounds in unripe seed pods from which morphine and codeine can be derived. However, the dried seeds contain none of these compounds. Poppy seeds have a subtle nutty flavor, making them an excellent topping for breads, cakes, mashed potatoes, and pasta.
